Ann Gay, Survivors Division Director, Welcomes You!

Welcome to the SMHAI Survivors network. We are a group of survivors working together to provide a safe, secure and informative place for fellow survivors. Some of us experienced the loss of our loved one by suicide recently, while others lost their loved ones a few years ago. Despite our different time frames, we understand the importance of reaching out and connecting with other suicide survivors.
We are hoping our fellow survivors will discover SMHAI to be a powerful resource and support network, while traveling along their journey of grief. We recognize the difficulties of the overwhelming emotions and the tremendously difficult days while adjusting to life without our loved ones. We’ve experienced the challenges of talking to family and friends and being faced with those awkward and uncomfortable silences that follow. Our Discussion Boards offer all survivors a safe, supportive and comfortable environment to voice concerns, shed tears, ask questions and the freedom to share their loved one without having to worry about the listener’s reactions. The power of sharing and talking helps to diminish the pain and sorrow plus gives a sense of comfort that others understand.
The SMHAI Survivor network also presents all survivors with many ways to express their love and grief through the many memorial options. Each memorial is uniquely touching and beautiful by offering selctions of: flowers, poetry, candles, pictures, etc. There are also ways to share your memories and experiences of: your dreams, signs from your loved one and your regrets. We hope you will find one or more memorials in which to send submissions about your loved one.
Our library articles plus the suggested reading list provides the most comprehensive suicide survivor information center and resource available. As research and publications continue to increase, the SMHAI web site will be updated frequently to supply survivors with as much information as possible, in one location; eliminating the frustration of constantly searching numerous web sites.
Survival support is a crucial part of the healing process. Our healing does not follow an orderly process and there is comfort in knowing someone is there to help and listen as we each stumble through the various and confusing stages of grief. Our world is just beginning to acknowledge and understand survivors and what we experience in our grief. The increasing number of deaths by suicide also means the number of survivors is increasing. SMHAI aims to have a voice in what goes on in the field of suicide and to help shape the future of suicide organizations. We strive to be the most comprehensive and informative Survivor network available anywhere. We hope you will join our group to find comfort and support, but to also help SMHAI in our goal to be heard and recognized around the world…and to save lives!
